IWJS, a part of M Group Services, is playing an important part in the preparations for this year’s Commonwealth Games, by cleaning the tunnels and underpasses of Birmingham.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be the biggest sporting and cultural event ever held in the city. As an opportunity to showcase the best that Birmingham and the West Midlands has to offer, it’s vital the city is looking its best.

IWJS is sending their specialist tunnel and wall cleaning unit to transform some of the most important tunnels and underpasses around Birmingham. They will be working on the A38 Aston Expressway particularly the Queensway tunnel, as well as others in the surrounding area.

The team will be using a fast and environmentally friendly method to clean the tunnels and underpasses. Their specialist tunnel cleaning unit uses an adjustable hydraulic arm that brushes biodegradable detergent over the surface to be cleaned. The detergent and remaining dirt is then jet washed off, leaving clean walls behind.

Shaun Leeder, National Contracts Director at IWJS said: “It’s exciting to be part of the preparations for such a big international event, particularly in the Queen’s Jubilee year. We will be working overnight and our specialist equipment means we can keep road closure times to a minimum, ensuring road users can keep moving around the city centre.

“The team does lots of work on some of the UK’s most well-known tunnels and we are excited to be expanding into the cleaning of underpasses on this project as well.”

IWJS is helping to prepare Birmingham for the one million ticket holders travelling in and out of the city. The team are working throughout June and July until the Games start on 28 July. The Games will take place over 11 days and finish on the 8 August.
